2019 Mercedes-Benz CLS450 4Matic First Drive Review

You may think that a coupe has two doors and one has four, but Mercedes-Benz is asking to separate. In 2004, the German luxury machine launched the first generation CLS, a "four-door coupe" with two sets of doors, but with slimmer styling than the average sedan. Interior and Technology

The interior of the CLS450 is immediately known to anyone who has spent time in a current generation of Mercedes S-Class or E-Class. It has the same detailed COMAND infotainment system, consisting of a 12.3-inch central display and a controller that is a part touchpad, partially click wheel.

Whether digital meters or navigation maps, the graphics are beautifully rendered. However, other features, such as the head-up adjustment, are buried deeper in the menus. The central screen also contains icons that make it basically think it's a touchscreen when it's not. As with many other luxury automaker infotainment systems, the CLS system works when you get used to it, but it's a bit of a learning curve.

Driving Experience

Under the hood, the CLS450 gives something old and something new. It is the first Mercedes since 1999 to have an inline-six engine, but it works with the car manufacturer's new EQ Boost mild hybrid system.

CLS is a regular gasoline car with a touch of electrical help, not a regular hybrid like a Toyota Prius. But even this limited amount of electrification eliminates the need for belt-driven accessories, allowing the standard engine stop-stop system to operate more aggressively, and even allows the car to slip off the engine under certain circumstances. Our test vehicle's optional air suspension system could not keep the body in check, but at least the ride was nice and comfy. The control unit gave very little indication of what the front wheels did.

Mercedes has many other options if you want a sporty medium sized four-door. Around the same time, the CLS450 hits, Mercedes, will release an AMG CLS53 version with a performance-adjusted version of the 3.0-liter inline-six EQ Boost propulsion that is good for 429 hp and 384 lb-ft of torque. These features will make driving easier and safer, but we found them to be less than helpful on the road. Their intervention was lumpy and unpredictable.
