RAM introduced the first hybrid system to an American pickup and made it standard on the base power equipment.
A 10 percent efficiency improvement in America's third best-selling vehicle should make quite a positive environmental impact. But what the 2019 RAM 1500 eTorque hybrid system does not do is to improve performance in a quantifiable way.
2019 RAM 1500s biggest advancement is an improved fuel economy with the eTorque mild hybrid system. On an American vehicle with extremely high sales volume, the hybrid's effects will be enlarged.
But the car does not have a better 0-60 time, will not make passing maneuvers easier and will not help you get
Lots of Trucks , less fuel requirement
RAM is on a solid third place in the US full-size truck market. It is working hard to get the Chevrolet and take a bit of Ford's commands. There were over 500,000 RAM pickups sold in the US in 2017, making it not only the third best-selling pickup but the third most popular vehicle in the country in total.
And in 2018, the RAM truck is the second best-selling vehicle in the US to date, with more than 250,000 sold already. An improvement of 10 percent of the fuel economy on these trucks certainly has a positive impact on the environment.
The eTorque mild hybrid system is standard on all Pentastar V6 powered 2019 RAM 1500 trucks and is optional on the Hemi V8. The option on the V8 will put you back $ 1,450 at the retailer.
What is a mild hybrid system, you ask? In this application, it means that the traditional generator on the engine has been replaced by a belt driven motor generator unit. The motor generator unit is essentially an electric motor powered by a 48 volt battery pack.
The motor generator unit is located on the front of the V6 engine, between the radiator and the engine block. On the V8 is the engine generator unit on top of the engine. In either case, the device interacts with the engine through a belt drive.
The 300 watt lithium ion battery for the system is stored in the center of the vehicle behind the rear seats. This keeps the battery weight low and centralized on the vehicle. The air-cooled battery pack is the size of a small suitcase.
The main use of the eTorque system is boot stop function, torque duration addition and brake energy regeneration. All of these features help improve fuel efficiency and help smooth the driving functions like starting, stopping and shifting gear. All of these driving events are slightly improved and more linear than on a standard gas-powered vehicle.
Driving eTorque RAM
Getting behind the wheel of a new RAM truck with eTorque technology is the same as running a new RAM truck. The ETorque system is almost unnoticeable, which I think is good.
The system does its job in the background and saves you dollar bills at the pump. As mentioned, the EPA eTorque on the V8 is about 10 percent more fuel efficient – adds about 2 mpg in mixed-use driving. As with all hybrid systems, fuel savings are more noticeable in stop-and-go city traffic than long highways. While the numbers are not yet on V6, it is expected to produce equivalent efficiency improvements.
The ETorque system also provides a number of comfort improvements over the standard all-gas engine. At idling, the engine turns down and / or turns off the cylinder. This, of course, saves fuel, but it also reduces cabin vibrations and engine noise while stationary. The ETorque system holds comfort systems, such as AC and heat, running in these times. And it helps the engine to provide an immediate response when you want your vehicle to move again.
The ETorque system controls the first half rotation of the wheels. This allows the engine to back up seamlessly without delaying the vehicle movement or being intrusive to the passengers. Older startup systems are quite violent and highly noticeable, but the eTorque system is quite the opposite.
Another area where the eTorque system helps with driver experience is when eight-step transmission up and down shift. The ETorque system helps the reef match in both cases, which enables seamless, extremely smooth gear changes.
Is Diesel the answer?
RAM was first to the US market with a half-tonne diesel car. We should see the new 2019 RAM 1500 EcoDiesel early next year. Will the new diesel car give us the performance and fuel economy balance we all want? For now, we have to settle on an impressive mild hybrid V6 or the always funny Hemi, with or without eTorque.

After spending even more time in the new RAM and its competitors, I can tell you this is an extremely competitive truck. The direct linear response to all drive inputs, steering, braking, acceleration and more makes this truck a winner.
The ETorque system improves it so much more – on the environment, by the pump and driving around the city.
