2018 MacBook Pro with i9 processor is the fastest portable Apple has done, but it can get better

I9 MacBook Pro is a technique and design that Apple has played for the last three models, but the choices made at the start of the line, echoing up to today, cut a little bit of what the computer might be like.

The latest MacBook Pro retains the fourth major body design that the product line has seen. The new design strongly launches the techniques used for the Retina MacBook, MacBook Air and iPad, with designs still thicker than 0.61

inches (15.5 mm), making it thinner than MacBook Air.

Apple's high-quality 15-inch MacBook Pro is still available in standard silver and a darker Space Gray finish, and is sold together with a smaller 13-inch version – but that model is another review.

As before, the Touch ID button is still a physical and it acts as an emergency to force a shutdown in case of a bad Kernel Panic, as well as a power switch. Other power features are automatically handled by default, while the user opens and closes the lid to wake or sleep the machine.

Touch ID is not universal. If you log out of your account, you will need to enter a password to log in again; Touch ID only works if your account is active. You must also manually log in after a power cycle, just like iOS devices.

The touch line is still intended to appear and act as a dynamic strip of virtual keyboard keys, unlimited by the physical structure of mechanical keys. When you hold down the UN key, the control panel returns to a default strip of 12 function keys and the ESC key (below).

If you boot into Windows, the touch bar still responds to display virtual function keys. But you're not reading to hear about the touch line again.

With the numbers

The whole point of the 2017 MacBook Pro update was the addition of Kaby Lake. 2018 has taken it a little longer with Coffee Lake and DDR4 RAM in the 15-inch model.

There are two main configurations of the 15-inch MacBook Pro. We covered the 7-inch 15-inch model for a little while on Saturday, and it's a very solid machine. And the one is probably the optional machine for most people watching a MacBook Pro.

For this review, we investigate the 2.9GHz 15-inch MacBook Pro, with 512GB of flash storage and 32GB of RAM. The retail price of this configuration is $ 3499.

Keypad, again and again

We have already talked for a long time about the keyboard in both the 13-inch MacBook Pro and 15-inch i7. We are not going to dive too deep into this.

Yes, it's a lot quieter. Yes, it's a new silicone package. No, we do not yet know if it will help reliability, but we're pretty sure there were improvements in the 2017 keyboard.

Silicon Testing

The model's i9 CPU has a base clock speed of 2.9 GHz and a maximum 4.8 GHz amplifier. Geekbench 4 is not the whole story, but the results for this i9 Macbook Pro are an impressive improvement from the top spec 2017 model.

Single-core performance is reached 5582 on the Geekbench test while the machine powers 24.226 for multi-core performance. This makes the machine the second fastest athlete Apple ever made for single-core burst performance, and the seventh for multi-core behind only iMac Pro, and two high end 2013 Mac Pro configurations.

Geekbench Results Test Broadly A number of processor tasks, most of which do not maximize your CPU, allow the I9 to run at impressive clock speeds. For tasks like video editing, the rendering tests are far more definite.

As we discussed after Apple's thermal throttle patch, the 2018 i9 15-inch MacBook Pro became 30 percent faster in the Cinebench R15, which hit 1056, against the 2017 peak of 805. The 2018 i7 configuration we investigated on Saturday returned a score of 991.

We ran a series of video editing tests that started with the Bruce X test in Final Cut Pro. This 5K rendering uses tasks primarily graphics and our top-specific 2018 Macbook Pro was just two seconds faster.

Next, we did a 5 minute 4K project with effects that tax the CPU and GPU evenly, but do not maximize them. Our top-specific 2018 model was 9 percent faster. The job took 3 minutes and 29 seconds to complete on i7, versus 2 minus and 47 seconds on i9.

After taking this step further, we wanted to see how this machine is flying under the most difficult loads that will maximize both graphics and cpu, using 4.5K RED RAW recording with effects. Our 5 min project accelerated 18 percent faster with our new i9 model.

Recovery took 14 minutes and 25 seconds to render on the 2017 15-inch i7 MacBook Pro, compared to 12 minutes and 15 seconds at i9-about 18 percent faster.

Reinforcing previous tests, we gave another 5 min 4K project with effects, but this time using HEVC recording and exporting to HEVC. Apple requires the use of this more efficient encoding if you want to shoot 4K 60 or 1080P 240FPS.

Apple's 2017 Macbook took 10 minutes to make the file, with the new i9 that takes only 3 minutes and 51 seconds. This difference is not just because of faster performance, but mainly because of much more efficient HEVC encoding and decoding of hardware in the 8th generation Intel processor.

Exit with Photoshop and Lightroom. The latest 15-inch Macbook was only about 4 percent faster to convert 50 edited raw images to JPEG, and we saw no smoothness differences using the applications.

True Tone Display

There is a lot to say about True Tone. In short, Apple's True Tone technology takes input from a pair of sensors on the screen, and will change the settings of the internal display and compatible external to take into account the lighting conditions in the room.

This is another feature you already know if you want it or not. Opinions are shared among the video and image editors about the use of the feature.

The function is not bad, but it is not necessarily good under all conditions and for all users. Since you can turn it off at will, you're not stuck with it if you do not need it.

At this time, we're not sure if it's just a box in a special list or something more useful Long term for most users. We will tell you in a few months.

The X in the GPU is nice, with variable enhancement

the Radeon Pro 555 and 560 ships in the 2017 model. The 2018 model has "X" versions of the same, with slightly better performance and more video RAM.

As previous models, macOS can be automatically activated and switch to dedicated GPU when needed and fall back to integrated graphics to save energy. In these cases, the graphics on the table are a hair faster than the previous generation's integrated chipset, but there is nothing to notice.

OpenCL graphics test in Geekbench 4 gave us an improvement with the extra X running from 42,990 to 52,499 in OpenCL. Metal was dramatically improved and hit 60,149 with 560X, versus 38,701 with 560-but a good deal of this gain is from software improvement.

RAM

The RAM has been updated in 2018 15-inch MacBook Pro from 16GB 2133MHz LPDDR3 to 16GB 2400MHz DDR4 solder on the motherboard. For an additional $ 400, you can get a total of 32 GB – which is what this configuration has considered.

As we said before, you already know if you need it. If you do not know if you do, you probably do not, but it's not a bad addition if you want to keep the machine for four years or more.

Apple has moved to DDR4 RAM to get 32GB option, as it literally could not get there with LPDDR3 RAM. The inclusion is both faster than LPDDR3, and more power hungry. And it is also warmer, which complicates an already dense thermal situation.

Related to all this …

Thermals

The 15-inch MacBook Pro is a hot machine. Although it's pretty good, it's not the heat we're referring to. It's hot in all respects, in a very small chassis.

We've said that before – We think Apple was beaten by Intel when they were ready for the 2016 MacBook Pro Cabinet by 2015. We know that in 2015, Intel was promising delivery of 10nm process Core chips well before now, and even less by 2018.

Coffee Lake is unapologetically still 14nm. Intel has not set a delivery target of seven years as it has not broken for months or years.

This, plus the DDR4 RAM, plus the 555X or 560X GPU, combined with a slim design, still leads to a machine that's not quite what it might be because of heat – even if it's far better than it was before the patch which was issued July 24th.

In use when the machine was under load, the keyboard's metal surface routinely hit 107F around the GH and J keys. It's still usable, but it's very, very hot. This may not be bad in winter, but in a virgin summer it is not very good.

There is still a large number of discerning details to investigate with the 15-inch MacBook Pro with regard to the thermal environment. We look much more in varying working environments, including ambient temperature effects, and machine directions that weeks and months wear to see if they make any difference at all to performance.

Flash speeds blow

That drive is absolutely no slouch. Running the BlackMagic Disk Speed Test after the machine had been indexing for three days, we saw a write speed of 2790 megabytes per second.

Elsewhere, it has argued that this is due to APFS cloning, but after consultation with BlackMagic, we have confirmed that it is not the case and the speeds are real.

Thunderbolt 3

There is still a lot of crying and grinding teeth about Thunderbolt 3 and by association, the USB-C connector. Two years later, users still complain at the expense of dongles to adapt, and Apple's lack of users in moving to the new contact.

The user's defense is not completely wrong, but the longer we get from the release, the less valid complaints are. The USB-C-to-whatever connectors are cheap and plentiful. You can get from there and it is not expensive to do it.

In Apple's defense, Thunderbolt 3 with the USB-C connector is more future-proof and far faster than USB 3.0, and is a game exchange for usage cases, if you let it help you and fight it less.

It is here and it will remain. It's time to express and cope with it.

A solution that can keep costs down is a Thunderbolt dock. While Thunderbolt 3-docks start at $ 199 store, Apple Thunderbolt 2 to the $ 49 Thunderbolt 3 Adapter will work nicely if you want to use an older dock with newer equipment, which possibly gives a view to a Thunderbolt 2 (or to and with original Thunderbolt) docks cheaper than a bag full of adapters.

Moreover, if you are considering an external GPU, many of the USB-A and Ethernet ports have an accessory that does not cost much more than a dock does. If all you need is some USB-A ports, get a USB 3.0 dock, along with a USB-C to USB-B cable for around $ 8. The problem solved.

In the case of MagSafe, we have tested USB-C for a very long time at this point. On a melamine, Corian or finished woodboard surface, the power required to extract Apple's USB-C charger cable is about three quarters of what it takes to connect a MagSafe 2 connection when the cable is pulled from less than 40 angles from the center of the horizontal plane , and less than 30 degrees from the center on vertical.

USB-C is not even near the 45W fat connector that Apple migrated from, to MagSafe.

And the power adapter also has a USB-C connector with the same disconnection power, so now there are two quick breakpoints in case of an accident or accidental move.

Apple's service number we've collected has this. MagSafe's introduction in January 2006 halved unintended damage call calls in 2009. There was no change in these figures for MagSafe 2. However, in the two years since MacBook Pro was released, there has been no increase in the unintentional damage rate at all – and possibly a decline, but we wait a year to fully declare it.

With a 10-hour battery, we're not sure why you want to connect a power cord along a transit route anyway. If you're worried, buy a USB PD battery and keep it next to your computer.

If you're still not happy that MagSafe is gone, there are affordable alternatives on Amazon.

USB-C is not the end of the world, but it is an adjustment for the users. This adjustment is better actually done, than struggling with using half-baked solutions.

MacBook Pro is a workhorse but not a desk

MacBook Pro is not an iMac Pro replacement in all respects, but with an eGPU it comes quite close. Everything boil down to your own personal workflow, and use things.

If you make long runs with rendering or similar, iMac Pro will work better for you. That said, unless you're going to buy a big bag and are willing to shlep it around to Starbucks or somewhere outside of the place, then the MacBook Pro is the way to go.

The I9 MacBook Pro is a solid machine, one that is faster than literally any other MacBook Pro that is made.

If most of your work is outbreaking, such as browsing HEIC files in Pictures, this machine is the best you can buy from Apple if you need a laptop. However, there is no universal key to all your computer problems and there are arguments for saving $ 300 and getting the Core i7 version instead, given proximity to the references and real-time results for long processing jobs. [19659003] But here's the case: not everything is a long treatment job. Even most editing tasks do not cause continuous CPU and GPU. Considering your own workflow in relation to what you do most of the time, is crucial to making this decision.

If you come from a 2017 or earlier MacBook Pro, it is undoubtedly a good choice from a performance point of view. However, the real world performance i9 is not quite higher than that for 2018 i7.

It's a lot of computer with great power, too much money. There are cheaper machines with i9 that handle many of the same thermal constraints that run windows. So, another question is, how much is macOS without compromise worth for you?

Is the five percent speed increase from this year's i7 15-inch MacBook Pro worth an additional $ 300 for what you do day by day for the i9 upgrade of $ 3,000 plus for the computer in the first place? We can not tell you for sure, and it depends on how much time you save by the five percent and how valuable that time is for you.

You can say everything you want it to be cheaper suppliers and you I'm right. But none of them brings macOS to the table. The work of Shoehorn Apple's operating system on them is exciting, but they are not exactly legal, certainly not ethical, and everyone has compromise.

Get the right tool for the right job. The I9 MacBook Pro is the right tool for MacOS users, but it may not be for everyone and that's fine.
