Despite the fact that Android has a global market share of 85%, the Apple App Store has historically been more profitable for app developers than Android Market / Google Play Store. Some mention the large number of Android users in developing countries, while others point to the price range of the phones available on the two platforms. Whatever the reason, the App Store traditionally has an edge over the Google Play Store in terms of revenue.
Benefit for the App Store reappeared in a new report from the Sensor Tower (via Tech Crunch). The data show that 164 app developers in the United States earned their first $ 1
million in net revenue from the Apple App Store in 2018 to date. It compares to 88 app developers in the states that achieved the same performance so far this year on the Google Play store. The 1.9 ratio is quite steady with last year's figures, which showed that 143 developers drove $ 1 million for the first time at the App Store, and 71 did it at the Google Play store.
The game category was the one that had the first time $ 1 million app publishers on both platforms. In the App Store, one-third of those developers who score $ 1 million in net revenue for the first time, focused on gaming. Leading the list was FoxNext Games with $ 15 million in revenue thanks to its Marvel Strike Force app.
While the percentage of App Store game developers receiving a seven-fold revenue value for the first time was 10 percentage points from last year, larger contributions came from Lifestyle and Health & Fitness this year. The couple had 10% and 12% respectively of the App Store's first million dollar developers. It doubled its percentage from 2017.
In the Google Play Store, the game category was responsible for 65% of the publishers scoring $ 1 million in revenue for the first time. It is in line with last year's 66%, and most other categories (none in double figures) were not changed either.
